In many areas of the country, the lack of rain may lead you to believe that you cannot have a beautiful flower garden. The truth of the matter is that with a little planning and careful consideration of the types of plants that you use, you too can have a wonderful garden. The most important thing to remember in planting your garden is to use plenty of compost or organic matter in your soil. This helps the soil to absorb and retain the moisture that it does receive.
Start by choosing the location of your garden. Keep in mind that if your garden gets morning shade it will be able to hang onto the dew that forms overnight a little longer, which can be beneficial. Begin by preparing the soil for planting. Dig the soil to loosen and add plenty of compost. Now you are ready to plant. Some plants that do well in dry conditions are Musk Rose, Butterfly Weed and Coreopsis. Forsythia is a very attractive flowering shrub that does well in dry conditions. Once you have your flowers picked out, you can plant them. Be sure to leave a little more space between them than specified on the containers, so there will be less competition for water and nutrients. Likewise you will want to apply a thick layer of mulch once you have completed your planting, this will help the soil to retain the moisture that it does have, as well as keep the soil cool. You should also plan to deadhead your flowers regularly. Deadheading is the process of removing the spent blossoms on the flowers. This keeps the plant’s energy devoted to making new blossoms. If you find that you do need to water your plants occasionally, do it late in the evenings, to slow evaporation, and allow the plants to make the best use of the water. If you keep these tips in mind, you should be able to grow a beautiful flower garden to enjoy no matter how dry the summer.
