If you are looking for an apartment or perhaps a house to rent, I have a few suggestions.
First of all look in a price range that you can afford,
sometimes people will love a place, rent it and then find they can't make the monthly rent payments. You'll need to know also if you are to pay all of the utilities or if any are furnished, also the amount for the deposits on these utilities and the security deposit so you can compute your income against paying for everything necessary before renting and signing a lease.
Depending on the size of your family you'll need to be sure you have enough space for each person, check out the closets and storage spaces also.
If you can't put all of your belongings in the apartment or house perhaps there is an outside storage building. If there is an outside storage facility is it secure against the elements plus against theft.
Be sure to look for cross-ventilation and if the rooms will be sunny, this helps a lot of heating and cooling. Look at the windows, are there blinds, shades, storm windows, etc. Be sure the heating and cooling systems are working, also
any furnished appliances in the apartment or house.
I would also look through all the rooms: make sure closet doors are closing and not sticking, floors are clean, carpet is clean and not in need of repair and that the plumbing isn't in need of repair. Hookups for your washer and dryer are also an essential item in renting a house, an apartment may only have laundry facilites in the building,
and not in the apartment.
Are you just looking at the apartment or the house, if so please take the time to look around the neighborhood, see if the area is well maintained and safe.
You will want to obtain information about the lease, how long an agreement must you sign and will the rent remain the same for that time, inquire about the security deposit as most places now require first and last month's rent.
If you have school age children you will want to know the location of the school, the churches also and places to shop in the area. You would not want to rent an apartment or a house and then find out that schools are not near, churches are far away or that shopping is not near as it would cost you a lot to travel distances to be near these.
If you have pets you'll want to see if they are acceptable, either inside or in the yard as you certainly don't want to move in and then be told you have to move or not have the pets.
I would suggest checking with local real estate management companies and letting them know the amount of monthly rent you wish to pay, well a range of low to high thus eliminating the time for the agents and also your family to see places you could not afford. If you take time to check
out my suggestions I am sure you will find the perfect apartment or house to rent.
